When updating your home exterior, big ticket items like cladding, paint colors, and landscaping are probably top of mind. But smaller elements, such as an outdoor side table or garage door hardware, are also important to think about. While they might not take up as much real estate, these details can still have a significant impact on your curb appeal. Plus, items like outdoor furniture can effect the function of your space too.

Mix and match

In the backyard design above, we created multiple cozy seating areas, giving the homeowner and their guests plenty of space to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

While we love matching outdoor furniture sets (you’ll see a few later in this post), sometimes we like to mix and match pieces within our designs. For the seating area closest to the pool above, we suggested a sleek outdoor side table in a charcoal hue and two teak lounge chairs. These pieces look great together but can also be moved around the yard and paired with the other furniture seen throughout.

Wicker for the win

This outdoor side table is made from all-weather, UV-resistant wicker, so it’s super durable in addition to being beautiful. But that’s not all. It’s also built to accommodate an umbrella and features an integrated beverage tub that’s concealed under the top.  We sandwiched it between two modern chairs with high-performance Sunbrella® cushions, but this table would look lovely with a wide variety of other furniture items as well.

The rendering above features another all-weather wicker side table we love using in our work. This round table can add a softness to any outdoor space and works especially well with transitional-style exteriors

We also used the wicker table in the design below. This time, we paired it with two lounge chairs with woven seats and teak frames. We incorporated another teak side table into the space too, leaving room for the homeowners to use the wicker one as a table or a foot rest. String lights and a patterned rug complete this casual covered patio.

Coordinate with other design elements

To tie into the various black elements in the design above, we opted for a black accent table and corresponding chairs. The table is made from wrapped, regatta cording and has a concrete top where you can place drinks or snacks. The table and chairs create a nice contrast against the light stone siding behind them without standing out too much thanks to the black front door and side door, light fixtures, rain chains, roofing, and siding on the garage

Matching set

If you’re worried the side table you purchase won’t match the rest of the furniture in your outdoor living space, opt for one that comes in a set. That way, you’ll know the pieces will work well together because they were designed to do exactly that.

The side table above is part of a three piece set that also includes the two chairs that flank it. The steel slatted top side table perfectly coordinates with the chairs, which are covered with resin wicker and have an open weave design. If you want to add a pop of color or some personality, throw pillows are an easy and affordable way to do so.

Make it multi-functional

We love multi-purpose design elements, such as the stool side table seen in the rendering above. As the name implies, this steel item can be used as a stool or a side table. Its simple design works well on the pared-back covered porch above. The round top mimics the curves of the two rocking chairs on either side of the table, connecting the three items in a visually pleasing way.

Wood side table

If you’ve been reading our blog for a while (or following us on social media) you’ve probably noticed that we love working wood elements into our designs. Wood adds warmth to a design and can make any home feel more welcoming. We used plenty of wood in the design above, from the front door and fence to the garage doors, so it made sense for the side table on the porch to be wood as well.

Contemporary accent table

This client wanted to move away from the Victorian style of her home and embrace a more contemporary aesthetic. While the new color palette certainly played a role in the transformation, so did the small designer elements, such as the porch furniture. We chose a contemporary outdoor side table and modern lounge chairs. These pieces look right at home on the updated wrap around porch.

Above is another design example featuring the same side table and lounge chair combination. This homeowner said their preferred style was transitional, which beautifully blends the old with the new. The contemporary table and modern chairs act as some of the “new” elements, while the front door maintains a more traditional look.

Finally, to highlight how versatile this seating set is, we’re showing it in a very modern setting. We rendered the vertical siding in a modern house color and accented it with warm wood siding. The front door, light fixtures, and house numbers also lean modern. The side table and chairs look right at home on the covered patio. They also play well with the rest of the design elements.

Matching coffee and side tables

This home features a fun seating area to the right of the entrance. The string lights and patterned rug give the space a casual vibe. The two love seats and coffee table, which matches the two side tables, add warmth and coziness. The wood table tops also tie into the columns, front door, and garage door.
