Modern Mansion Design Ideas for Luxury Living

When you hear the phrase “modern mansion,” what comes to mind? A gigantic house with luxurious amenities? An enormous estate with a wrought-iron fence and perfectly landscaped yard?

Merriam-Webster’s definition of a mansion — a large imposing residence — is pretty vague, and even real estate agents and other industry experts struggle to reach a more specific consensus on what exactly constitutes a mansion. Generally speaking though, most people rely mainly on size to define a mansion, with 5,000 square feet being the minimum.

But size isn’t the only factor to consider when coming up with a modern exterior home design. Luxurious amenities, such as a pool, tennis court, or sauna are must-haves in a modern mansion. High-quality building materials like expensive hardwood and stunning stonework are important too. Even the land on which the home is situated on is key. Modern mansions are often located on large lots with other buildings, such as a pool house, and other features like a zen garden or a pond.

With all this in mind, we’ve decided to share some of our designs we feel fit the description of a modern mansion. Keep reading to see the designs and learn how you can achieve a modern mansion aesthetic for your home exterior.

Warm & welcoming modern mansion

This client wanted a warm and welcoming exterior featuring some modern touches. The home is expansive and sits on 30 acres, but the owner didn’t want it to be “ritzy or for people to drive up and feel like they are at a mansion. Just an inviting, welcoming, warm look is my desire.”

To achieve the desired aesthetic, we took inspiration from the home’s natural surroundings. We suggested a combination of light stone siding and shingle siding rendered in Benjamin Moore’s Iron Mountain. A cozy seating area in front of the outdoor fireplace is covered by a wood pergola with gorgeous greenery growing on it. This lounge area adds to the inviting feel of the home and further connects it to its surroundings. A wood front door and copper gutters also add warmth to the design.

Modern mansion made for entertaining

At almost 7,000 square feet, this Virginia home certainly fits the size requirement for a modern mansion. But that’s not the only reason we’ve included it in this roundup. The lot the home sits on is impressive, with a large pond and waterfall, and the list of luxury amenities is lengthy.

The backyard is designed for entertaining with a plunge pool, fire pit, dining table, and hanging chairs. The side (below) features an intimate lounge area with another water feature and a sleek glass railing that gives the homeowners an unobstructed view of the backyard. This view also provides a closer look at some of the quality cladding materials used throughout the exterior. A rendering of the side of a modern mansion

Even the garage doors (above and below) in this design are of the highest quality. We love the contemporary style of these doors and the way the wood ties into the woodgrain siding and brown stone siding.

Southern-style mansion

The owner of this Georgia home requested a timeless design that would give the exterior a “Georgian/Southern mansion look.” We suggested painting the brick and trim with Benjamin Moore’s Steam, a versatile off-white that’s clean yet soft. White columns with stone bases frame the double entry doors, giving the entry area a sense of grandeur. A copper awning, light fixtures, and gutters add an elegant touch.

Finally, while this property might not have a large front porch like many Southern homes, we did design a small seating area to the right of the walkway. The effortlessly chic chairs enhance the elegance of this home exterior instead of detracting from it.

Tudor-style mansion

This lakefront estate was built in 1895, and the owner wanted to update it while honoring its history and paying homage to its “Tudor mansion architecture.” We recommended limewashing the brick and using Benjamin Moore’s Aegean Olive as an accent to highlight some of the architectural details. The new color palette gives the home an updated appearance without losing any of its historic charm.

We also created a design of the home that features its original red brick. Aegean Olive is a paint color that complements red brick well, so we kept the earthy hue as the accent color in this design.

In both versions, lush landscaping lines the front of the home, and a water feature in front of steps make the entrance a focal point.

Majestic mansion

“Majestic mansion” is the vibe this client wanted for their home exterior, and our designers delivered. A crisp, fresh white — Benjamin Moore’s Simply White — on the stucco and trim is perfect for this California home. Wood double entry doors add some warmth, while the elegant light fixtures add to the simple-but-sophisticated look. The gorgeous landscaping dramatically boosts the curb appeal too.

Backyard oasis with pool

This spacious red brick home has one of the top amenities of a modern mansion — a pool. The pool runs almost the entire length of the backyard and is the star of the outdoor area. This modern home design also features an outdoor kitchen and dining table, as well as several lounge areas perfect for poolside relaxation. The chaise furthest away from the home has an umbrella overtop for shade, while the hanging chair and sofa with matching chairs are shaded by the balcony.

Tall windows and columns draw the eye up to the roof and enhance the height of the home.

The pool is also the focal point of this backyard design. A fun and functional outdoor living space was crucial to this homeowner, who told us “I want the back of the home to be comfortable for entertaining and look beautiful from the golf course.”

So, in addition to the pool, we included a grill, dining table, fire pit with string lights, and a casual seating area in our design. The lush landscaping adds a bit of privacy and gives the yard a resort-like feel.
