#1 // Get sporty
The pool area in this backyard was dilapidated and some exterior home remodeling was in order. We took the existing lattice off of the exterior, opening the back of the home up to make way for a functional patio, complete with dining and seating areas. We extended the paved space of the yard to achieve a more complete hardscape. The fun shape of the pool inspired us to bring other entertaining elements to the space, including a ping pong table and a mini golf area.
Our designers also removed the chain link fence and created an additional lounge area. The pergola provides a semi-covered space to relax beneath and the hanging egg chairs tie in with the eclectic vibes throughout the design. In this space, we suggested lush landscaping, adding to the serenity and beauty of the yard. We also included a fire pit, making this the ultimate relaxation area.
#2 // Enhanced entertainment
The intention of the existing design was evident: the homeowners wanted to be able to enjoy themselves outside. Our designers wanted to honor that intent and make it more impactful. We overhauled the existing outdoor bar area with a more modern feel using a combination of black accents to match the exterior and wood for the bar top, which complements the nearby wood columns and furniture. In this space, we also added new windows that allow for a better view of the bar from inside. Our designers also added a spot to play cornhole, with spectator seats included.
When our designers come up with exterior home remodeling ideas, we like to think of ways to showcase the most attractive features. We replaced the existing railing on the balcony with sleek iron, which makes the grill space more visible and prevalent. The iron spiral staircase blends well with the balcony and creates a flowy, open appearance. Finally, we revamped the existing empty mulched space and turned it into another outdoor seating area.
#3 // Play up the playscape
Sometimes exterior home remodeling ideas need to accommodate adults and children. This backyard had an impressive treehouse joined by a sectioned-off playscape. The only problem with the play area was that there wasn’t much room for the adults to comfortably hang out and watch the kids play. We suggested moving the playscape to the other side of the treehouse.
Our designers integrated a hardscaped section ideal for adults into the play space, creating an obvious visual divide with the materials used for ground cover. We added sand beneath the treehouse, keeping that part of the existing design from being compromised, and pavers on the right. We included a beautiful outdoor fireplace along with an inviting seating space. In the end, our redesign resulted in a space the whole family can enjoy until the cows come home (see what we did there?).
#4 // Be bold
Don’t shy away from bright or bold paint colors, especially if you’re looking to turn heads with your exterior remodel. We refreshed this exterior with a captivating rusty red hue — Sherwin Williams’ Roycroft Copper Red. This color especially stands out alongside the white accents and trim. We particularly enjoy how the contrasting colors allow the portico to stand out more. Completing this fresh aesthetic, we landscaped along the house and walkway and used an iron railing on the porch and stairs.
#5 // Pickleball perks
Pickleball is all the rage these days, and this client wanted the option to play at home. Our designers replaced the existing driveway with a pickleball court that doesn’t compromise the usability of the driveway or garage. The green shades of the court complement the dark olive hue we suggested for the exterior. We also included a subtle garage awning which provides a small shaded space.
#6 // Stacked spaces
Our designers are experts at making the most out of our clients’ existing spaces. There was plenty of empty space in this homeowner’s backyard, so our designers filled it in a functional, intentional way. We brought pavers to the left side of the design and used a small stone wall to divide the new seating space from the rest of the hardscape. Adding dimension, we staggered permeable pavers across the yard.
We saw a lot of opportunity to connect the two doors on the back side of the exterior, so we closed the space in, creating a screened-in porch. Outside of the screened-in area, we added a simple patio space, covered in wood decking. Tying in the upper level, we topped the screened-in porch with a balcony, which provides even more space to comfortably enjoy the outdoors.
#7 // Welcome windows
Making way for more natural light to flow through your home is a great thing to consider when it comes to exterior home remodeling. Our designers replaced the existing windows on the right side of this house with ground-to-roof window panels, defined by thick black trim. We love the open, modern look the windows create, and we echoed that openness above the entry. Here, we swapped the existing double archways for a cleaner opening, maximizing visibility.
Enhancing the charm and whimsy of the Juliet balcony, our designers added some hanging vines to the space above the entrance. We wanted to achieve a sleeker walkway to complement the window wall, so we reimagined the existing walkway with clean, straight lines and uniform landscaping.
#8 // Add in water features
Water features are one of the most reliable ways to add ambiance during exterior home remodeling. Our designers wanted to enhance this tropical home in an elegant way. We reimagined the big front yard, creating a luxurious walkway with a circular mid-section, anchored by a fountain. The mix of mulch, plants, and landscape lighting outlines the walkway in a dynamic way.
Our designers amplified the architecture near the front porch by bringing subtle arches to the openings. These curves complement the winding walkway to the left and the circular space. Our designers suggested painting the brick exterior off-white to warm up the aesthetic. We leaned into the environment more for our redesign, incorporating beautiful blooms and plants throughout.
