The before

Mike’s red brick ranch house, which was built in 1985, looked dated, and the brick veneer was cracked in several spots. Mike wanted to paint the brick to hide the cracked patches but struggled to select a color. We knew with the right color palette and design elements, Mike’s home could become a show stopper. As Mike said,

I knew we had to get the color right the first time, but I had no idea on how to choose one.

The design

For the new color palette, we recommended Benjamin Moore’s Seapearl on the brick and James Hardie siding with Simply White, also by Benjamin Moore, on the trim, garage, and eaves.

We recommended adding two dormers as well as stone siding in the entry area and around the base of the home. Our design also features garage awnings, black shutters, wood double entry doors, a stone walkway, new light fixtures, and planters

Our revised design features lintels above two of the windows instead of shutters.

Another version of the design that Mike requested features darker stone siding in the entry area, no dormers, and lighter front doors. Overall, Mike said he was impressed with the renderings he received.

When the plan came back, it was jaw-dropping.

The process

Mike told us work began on his home in May 2022 and that the project was completed in about 60 days. He sourced the materials — such as the stone, front doors, and light fixtures — himself but hired contractors to install them and do the painting.

“We stayed as close to the plan as possible,” Mike said.

We always recommend sampling and testing paint colors before committing. Factors such as natural lighting, undertones, and your property’s fixed elements will have a significant impact on how a color will appear on your exterior. Our friends at Samplize offer extra-large 9 x 14.75 inch peel-and-stick paint samples of the colors we love for exteriors. Order your ‘Real Paint, No Mess’ samples from Samplize here.

Mike also showed his brick&batten design to his architectural review board, which must approve any changes to home exteriors in his neighborhood.

The board member who approved your plan said, ‘I have seen transformations in this neighborhood, but this one is over the top.’ My house is no longer a tract house. It’s one of a kind.

The actual after

Mike wasn’t lying when he said he stayed as close to our design as possible. From the paint and stone siding to the entry doors, garage awning, and window lintels, he followed our rendering almost to the letter. We love how Mike’s home turned out, and we aren’t the only ones.

To say I love my house is an understatement. The transformation is incredible. I can’t tell you how many neighbors have stopped to say how beautiful the house is.

While we love natural brick, we’re also big fans of painting it, especially if a home’s brick veneer is in poor condition. Mike’s home is a perfect example of how painting a brick home’s exterior can totally change its look. His once-dated ranch house now looks fresh and inviting, and it’s still grabbing the attention of passers-by almost a year after the renovation process came to an end.

The work has been completed now for almost a year, and people are still stopping. I just can’t say enough about how wonderful the whole process was; great design, great contractors, and a great big thank you to everyone at brick&batten.

We believe all homeowners deserve to have curb appeal they love, just like Mike. Whether you have no idea what updates you want to make to your home or simply need a little guidance, we’re here for you. Start your exterior design project today.
