Painting a Brick House in Georgia

Painting a brick house can be a challenging task for some homeowners to tackle. Many wonder if they will miss the natural brick, while others struggle to select the perfect paint color.

Stacy M. had a brick home in Georgia she wanted to update, but she wasn’t quite sure what changes she should make. After following us on Instagram for about a year, she reached out for help.

I wanted to make changes to my home’s exterior for many years, but I didn’t know where to begin.

Keep reading to learn how we harnessed the power of exterior paint to help Stacy transform her brick home and see the process from start to finish.

The before

With its blue shutters, white accents, and dark window trim, Stacy’s red brick home looked dated and mismatched. The home had great bones, but some of the design elements didn’t feel entirely intentional.

The design

Our first design option for Stacy’s home featured Benjamin Moore’s Seapearl on the brick, Sherwin Williams’ Urbane Bronze on the trim, eaves, and vents, and Benjamin Moore’s Black on the garage door and shutters.

We also provided an option with wood shutters. Both renderings include a wood gable and columns, a metal roof over the porch, a landscape-lined walkway, a Corten steel planter, copper gutters, new exterior light fixtures, and a black front door with glass.

Our final design option for Stacy included many of the same design elements as the previous two versions with a few changes to the color palette. First, we recommended painting the shutters with Sherwin Williams’ Dorian Gray. We also suggested painting the gable and columns with Benjamin Moore’s Simply White and carrying the hue through to the trim and eaves, as well. Finally, we rendered the windows, garage door, and front door in Benjamin Moore’s Onyx

Stacy told us, “It was everything I wanted but didn’t know how to articulate.”

The process

Stacy hired a contractor to bring her brick&batten design to life, and she noted that was one of the most challenging aspects of her renovation.

I thought it would be easy considering the virtual design, but I interviewed five contractors before I found one whom I trusted.

Once she found a contractor she felt comfortable hiring, Stacy said she relied on her deliverable throughout the project. While some of the design elements didn’t work within her budget, Stacy noted that she used her rendering as inspiration and also found the paint color recommendations particularly useful.

I had lost so much time in the paint store trying to find the correct shade of white, off-white, black, etc. But to have brick&batten provide the colors and illustrate on the house exactly how it would look …. FANTABULOUS!

We always recommend sampling and testing paint colors before committing. Factors such as natural lighting, undertones, and your property’s fixed elements will have a significant impact on how a color will appear on your exterior. Our friends at Samplize offer extra-large 9 x 14.75 inch peel-and-stick paint samples of the colors we love for exteriors. Order your ‘Real Paint, No Mess’ samples from Samplize here.

The actual after

Painting her brick house turned out to be a huge success for Stacy, who said she was thrilled with the final result.

I absolutely love my home! Brick&batten was able to design exactly what I wanted.

Stacy went ahead with Seapearl on the brick and the dark shutters and accents we recommended in our first rendering. She selected a similar front door and garage door and created the covered patio area we designed, including the gable and columns.

A painted brick house transformation

Stacy told us she loves her painted brick home — and she’s not the only one. Her neighbors are also impressed with the transformation and are now eager to get to work updating their exteriors.

I have had many neighbors stop and ask about the design and color. It has also inspired some of my neighbors to begin their own external projects, but it is great to be the first.
