#1 // A cohesive covered porch addition
If you’re building a new porch, you want to make sure it looks like a cohesive part of your home’s design rather than an afterthought. The porch addition on the house above features wood columns and a wood ceiling. These wood elements match the wood ceiling of the awning over the garage doors and the lintel on top of the doors leading out to the Juliet balcony. Additionally, we used the same paint color on the portico, garage doors, and eaves.
#2 // Sleek and simplified
The existing façade of the home above was busy and cluttered looking. We recommended a series of design updates to give the exterior a cleaner, more refined appearance.
We removed the stone structure framing the entrance and replaced the porch roof with a metal one. We also swapped the dated porch columns with thinner ones rendered in the same paint color used on the home’s brick, siding, and eaves. Light stone siding in the porch area brightens the space up. Removing the shutters and cleaning up the landscaping helps declutter the exterior tremendously.
#3 // Create symmetry
There’s something so satisfying — and aesthetically pleasing — about a symmetrical design. The exterior of this home was already quite symmetrical, and we maintained that balance with the porch addition. There’s a pair of white columns on both sides of the front door connected by the same modern cable railing. Each side of the porch also features the same set of chairs and table, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and planters. A rain chain on the far left and right side of the porch further add to the symmetry of this design.
#4 // Ditch the railing
Porch railings are important for safety, but they’re not always necessary, especially if your porch isn’t raised very high. When that’s the case, we often recommend forgoing a railing to make the porch feel open and connected to the yard.
For the home above, we suggested modern columns with concrete bases and no railing. Instead, to create a subtle visual divide between the porch and the yard, we lined the porch with landscaping.
#5 // Incorporate an accent wall
If you want your front porch to stand out, consider an accent wall featuring a different paint color or cladding material than the rest of your home. We extended the footprint of the front porch above considerably, which made the design element more prominent. But we also used horizontal wood siding in the space to contrast with the blue-gray stucco. The white porch columns, fascia, and soffits also pop against the painted stucco.
#6 // Create outdoor rooms
One of our go-to tricks for making a large outdoor space more functional is to create multiple “rooms” within it. We often do this by using different flooring materials, outlining an area with landscaping, or creating layers, such as a multi-level deck.
You can easily create these outdoor rooms on your covered front porch too, as demonstrated above. On the far right side, there’s a cozy lounge area with a l-shaped sectional. Moving left, a section of stone siding separates this area from another seating area closer to the front door. These separate spaces feel like distinct rooms even though they’re all part of the same porch.
#7 // Small details matter
This home exterior underwent a major transformation. The most noticeable change is the light, coastal-inspired color palette.
When it comes to the covered porch, however, several smaller updates had a significant impact. We replaced the existing columns with slightly thicker ones and swapped the railing for one with a more intricate design. Antique copper light fixtures add to the French coastal aesthetic the client desired. We also incorporated metal planters on the porch and a hanging swing per the homeowner’s request. Another request of the client was to work her beautiful bouglavilea plants into the design. We put them front and center hanging from the porch roof. Finally, we flanked the stairs leading to the porch with more planters and bushes.
#8 // Partially covered porch
Covering your porch doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing situation. For this home, we covered two areas of the porch and left the rest uncovered. First, we suggested an awning over the front door. Door awnings can help draw the eye to your entrance, but they also protect the area from weather-related damage.
This porch extends from the entrance area of the home to the right side of the façade. This section is the second area we suggested covering. This time, we opted for a pergola, from which we hung two rattan chairs. Both coverings feature a combination of wood and black building materials, creating cohesion.

How do you style a covered front porch?
Now that we’ve shared a plethora of covered porch ideas for you to consider, you might be wondering how to style your refreshed outdoor living area. The answer will, of course, depend on a wide range of factors, such as the porch size, style of your home, budget, etc. But generally speaking, you’ll want to think about seating, light fixtures, and other decor items like rugs and planters.
The front porch above features one of our favorite outdoor seating options — a porch swing! The brown rattan and black ropes of the hanging loveseat work well with the home’s color palette and other design elements. The contemporary area rug has a similar color scheme, and the front door and planters that frame it are also rendered in similar hues.
