Why Black Works for Home Exteriors
Black exteriors exude confidence! Whether you want a sleek contemporary home, a dramatic farmhouse, or a moody cabin, shades of black set the tone and vibe. This color enhances architectural details, provides strong contrast, and pairs beautifully with natural materials like wood, stone, and brick.
Beyond aesthetics, black works well in various climates. Dark hues absorb, making them ideal for cooler regions. In warmer climates, black paint colors may have the potential to warm your house than lighter colors would. So, keep this is mind if you’re wanting the look, but not higher energy costs. Although, certain siding could alleviate this such as stucco, fiber cement boards like Hardie Board, and wood.
Black has been and still remains a highly versatile and impactful choice for exterior paint colors.
Finding the right shade of black
Not all blacks are created equal. Some lean cool with blue or gray undertones, while others feel warmer with hints of brow and green. Your home’s lighting, other building materials, and of course your complementing colors will determine what shade of black could look great as the central color. Our designers love to use shades of black on homes that are nestled in nature like mountain homes. However, we’ve also used black to update craftsman style homes and barndominiums.
A deep charcoal balances a bold approach with softness from gray and even blue undertones. This shade works well for those who want a dark exterior without the commitment to a stark and truer black. Pair it beautifully with a soft or crisp white trim for contrast, or use it with light greiges for a muted look. A few of our favorite choices would have to be Benjamin Moore’s Black Beauty and Soot, and Sherwin-Williams® Inkwell.
Jet black is the boldest of them all, delivering the deepest and richest black possible. This hue makes very strong statement on any style home. When paired with bright white trim, it creates a high-contrast design that’s sure to turn heads. Benjamin Moore’s Black, and Sherwin-Williams® Tricorn Black and Caviar are superb choices for a true black exterior.
Finally, blacks with hints of green or brown are trending right now and are an easier way to dip your toes into the dark side. These shades of black work really well with greiges and soft whites as the accent color. They look great on transitional and modern homes, and oftentimes are chameleon colors, changing with moving sun. We must mention our go-to favorites like Benjamin Moore’s Midsummer Night and Black Knight, and of course Urbane Bronze, Black Fox, Greenblack by Sherwin-Williams®.
WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND SAMPLING AND TESTING PAINT COLORS BEFORE COMMITTING. FACTORS SUCH AS NATURAL LIGHTING, UNDERTONES, AND YOUR PROPERTY’S FIXED ELEMENTS WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON HOW A COLOR WILL APPEAR ON YOUR EXTERIOR. Best accent colors for black exteriors
Pairing shades of black with accent colors won’t stray you too far from the basics. We’ve found that whites, grieges, and grays are best for a cohesive and intentional design. Besides complementary paint colors, the color and hues of other materials like wood, metal, brick, or stone play a crucial role in executing a façade that flows from one feature to the next.
For a classic contrast, you can’t go wrong with a simple white. White trim against black is a clean, no fuss, and straightforward choice. This combination gives any exterior a fresh and polished look.
Wood tones are a fantastic way to add warmth to a home. With so many colors of stain to choose from, there’s something for everyone. We’ve applied both light and dark wood to black homes with stunning results. Cedar porch ceilings, mahogany front doors, and oak pergolas introduce organic elements that prevent the home from feeling too jolting. Don’t forget about stone! Stone comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors, which is why it’s a wonderful way to add accent colors, texture, and visual interest.
To add pops of color, consider landscaping. Lush, evergreen plants are gorgeous against dark backdrops, enhancing the rich nature of black while providing a grounded feel. The dark background makes the green stand out and allows homeowners to have a big impact with minimal effort.
How to use shades of black effectively
When using shades of black as your exterior color, you should know where not to apply it just as much as where it looks best. You want your home to feel refined rather than heavy. Lighting is an important factor to consider. The changing sun throughout the the day can make any color look different. Test paint samples on your exterior, viewing them at different times of the day. You’ll be surprised at how different they look.
To break up an expansive dark façade, incorporate stone, brick, or wood elements to add dimension. We love to use a light beige stone with black exteriors, but wood and brick design elements are equally gorgeous.
If you’re looking for a monochromatic look, try applying a shade of black as your central color and a lighter shade of black was the trim color. This will make for a super moody style, but will still have an intentional and elegant touch.

The lasting appeal of black exteriors
A well-executed black exterior will never go out of style. The right shade, accent materials, and complementary colors create a stunning, sophisticated home that will stand the test of time and trends. Whether you choose a deep charcoal, jet black, or a nature inspired black hue with brown or green undertones, embracing shades of black on the dark side elevates your home’s curb appeal while making a bold and confident statement on your street.
