#1 // Consider materials carefully

From concrete and flagstone to wood and tile, there are a wide variety of materials you can use to build a patio. The right material for your project can vary based on your location, budget, and style.

Gravel and brick are great DIY options that are also very budget friendly. Concrete is another affordable patio material. Stone is a sophisticated solution, and patterned tile can add some personality to your patio.

If you live somewhere with harsh winters, consider concrete, brick, or natural stone. If your patio space is large, consider using a mixture of materials to break up the area and add visual interest.

#2 // Define the space

Clearly defining the various areas of your property will increase functionality and make your layout feel intentional. In the design above, we created distinction between the patio area and the rest of the yard by adding a railing and lining it with landscaping. This creates a visual separation between the patio and the yard. We used the same railing on the left side of the home and connected the two areas with a walkway.

#3 // Prioritize privacy

Creating privacy for your patio space is important — especially if it’s located on the front side of your home. One easy way to do this is by adding a privacy screen or fence, as seen above. The wood fence blocks the view of most of the patio area from passersby without completely closing in the space. It also separates the patio from the rest of the front yard.

Another option is to utilize landscaping to add privacy. Plant tall shrubs or large bushes around your patio to make the area more private.

This client wanted to convert part of their driveway into a patio. We suggested patterned flagstone for the patio area and concrete for the driveway. Using two different materials helps define the spaces. We covered the patio and recommended a brick wall for privacy and further separation from the driveway. Plenty of planters and some furniture make the new space feel cozy and inviting.

#4 // Add shade

Covering a portion of your patio (or all of it) with an awning, roof, or other design element can offer protection from the elements and make your patio more functional. A covering like the one seen above will ensure you can use your patio space rain or shine.

Pergolas are another smart shade solution for patios and other outdoor areas. For the winery above, we covered the patio with a wood pergola to offer shade to the customers enjoying the outdoor space. The wood ties into the barn doors and the siding used on the gable and adds to the rustic chic aesthetic of this commercial property

#5 // Comfort is key

The aesthetics of your patio are obviously important — but don’t forget about comfort! With the outdoor fireplace, large rug, comfy lounge chairs, and woven tables, the patio above feels like a cozy outdoor living room. The more comfortable your outdoor space, the more time you’ll want to spend enjoying it.

#6 // Incorporate an outdoor kitchen

Your living room isn’t the only interior space you can recreate outdoors. A patio like the one above is the perfect place for an outdoor kitchen and dining area. The kitchen setup features a sink, mini fridge, grill, and plenty of storage and counter space. The dining table and chairs provide a space to enjoy an al fresco meal. To ensure this space can be utilized on hot, sunny days, we covered the patio with a pergola.

This well-appointed patio also features an outdoor kitchen and dining area, as well as a lounge space complete with a cozy fireplace. Half of the space is covered by a pergola, and the other half is protected by an awning.

#7 // Light it up

If you want to use your patio after the sun goes down, adequate lighting is crucial. The string lights hanging from the pergola above illuminate the patio and also add a whimsical touch. The two wall lanterns flanking the door also help light up the space.

#8 // Consider — and connect to — other spaces

This design features a covered patio (on the left) and a detached room (on the right) that also has its own patio. While the room is physically separated from the rest of the home, we still wanted it to feel like a cohesive part of the property. To achieve this, we incorporated a walkway that leads from one patio to the next. We also used the same material for the patio floors and lined each space with landscaping.

A backyard patio remodel connecting the space to the pool

In the design above, we extended the homeowner’s existing patio, making room for a luxurious lounge area and outdoor fireplace. We also designed a permeable paver walkway that connects the patio to the pool. Now, the homeowner can easily move from one space to the next, and both parts of the yard feel connected.

#9 // Play with fire (responsibly)

This patio remodel is a perfect example of how simple updates can have a major impact. Replacing the old, cracked concrete and adding a fire pit instantly updated this backyard space. We added new furniture and a graphic rug to the fire pit area and transformed it into a comfortable space to relax and unwind.

New windows and a glass door, plus a fresh coat of paint and warm wood accents complete this backyard design.
