Can you put an outdoor dining table on grass?

It’s not ideal to put an outdoor dining table on grass, and our designers don’t recommend it. For starters, the uneven surface of the grass can cause the tables and chairs to be unstable. Grass is also susceptible to moisture, and after a good rain, the damp ground will sink your table and chair legs right into a squishy mess. And don’t even get us started on the bugs that breed in grassy environments.

Instead of putting your outdoor table smack dab in your yard, consider using pavers or decking like our designers did for this backyard. We slightly elevated the outdoor dining space with wood decking, and we added a rug beneath the table to accentuate it. The covered space encompasses both the outdoor kitchen and the dining table, maximizing comfort. Among the beautiful landscaping and hardscaping, the table still manages to break through as a stand-out feature.

Maximize comfort

Comfort is key when implementing an outdoor dining table into your backyard. If you’re going to eat a meal in the great outdoors, you should be able to enjoy more than just the food, after all. For this design, we placed the table beneath a ceiling fan to keep the space nice and cool. We also added mounted lights on both sides of the windows for added nighttime visibility.

Our designers flanked the table with black planters, which complement the simple plant used for a centerpiece. The black accents bring out the black features on the table and chairs, providing contrast against the off-white exterior. The balcony above the outdoor dining area features the same mounted lights, windows, and ceiling fan, creating a cohesive aesthetic.

Optimize for entertaining

Outdoor dining is an excellent feature to have in your backyard if you like to entertain guests. Our designers implemented a long outdoor table on this back patio. Its spacious design accommodates more guests, making it ideal for hosting gatherings, parties, and family meals.

The umbrella provides shade for every diner at the table, ensuring the space is comfortable for all. Plus, the umbrella adds some style to the space, coordinating with the other outdoor décor for a cohesive look. The layout and styling of the table exudes a welcoming vibe destined to draw in homeowners and guests alike.

How do you style an outdoor dining table?

As with any exterior design element, there are plenty of ways to get creative. When it comes to your outdoor dining table, you don’t want to overcrowd the table itself. A simple centerpiece like a lantern, flower vase, or a potted plant such as the one we used to accentuate this light wood table can enhance the ambiance. Styling your table should be rooted in combining functionality with aesthetics to create a space that’s equally inviting and practical.

Above, the copper lantern hanging above the table creates a charming vibe. The light also adds a warm, cozy glow to the space for evening dining and entertaining. The durable, white cushioned chairs provide comfort and some aesthetic cohesion with the other outdoor seating areas in the backyard. Rugs are also paramount when styling outdoor tables. The rug we used here adds contrast to the space while also providing added comfort underfoot and mess protection to the pavers beneath.

Explore shade solutions

Nothing can kill the vibe of outdoor dining quite like the blistering heat of the sun beaming down on you. In this design, the outdoor table occupies its own section of the backyard. We lined the elevated space housing the table with a railing along the perimeter and stairs for safety.

Because of the open layout, the table is susceptible to sun exposure. To fix this, we used an umbrella to provide shade. The black umbrella contrasts with the light wood and white cushions of the chairs and ties together the black and white scheme of the other outdoor seating spaces.

There are several other effective solutions to explore if you need shade for your table. Outside of umbrellas, there are more permanent options, like pergolas or gazebos. You could also consider retractable awnings, shade sails, and tall shrubs and plants.

Pay attention to placement

Aside from considering what lies beneath your table, you should also think about the place in your backyard that makes the most sense to incorporate an outdoor dining table. For this backyard, we lined the grill up with the chimney. We wanted the table to be close to the grill, making it easy to maneuver the food from where it’s cooked to where it’s eaten. This table is also right by the back door of the house, so if diners need to access the interior for a forgotten condiment or beverage, the practical layout allows.

Spruce up simplicity

You can include a simple outdoor dining table in your backyard design and still find creative ways to make a statement. Most of this design embraces muted neutral hues, so the few black accents we used bring a burst of boldness. Our designers used a couple of black planters in the yard, black mounted lanterns on the house, and a black end table between the chairs near the outdoor fireplace.

Building upon that same visual interest, we chose a round outdoor dining table with black chairs. The black and white striped umbrella adds an eclectic touch to the space, and the rug beneath is the perfect finishing touch. The table is quite simple by nature, but some impactful styling choices make it stand out among the rest of the backyard elements.
