New Paint for a House with Flat Roof in Colorado

With so many exterior paint colors to choose from, picking the perfect one for your home can feel like an insurmountable task. Dawn L. had done some updates to her Colorado home’s exterior but was struggling to select paint colors. After discovering us online, she reached out for assistance.

Choosing paint colors is HARD, particularly for the exterior of a home. It’s easy enough to toy with paint samples for interior jobs (an accent wall here or there), but exterior [paint] is much more so overwhelming. I did a Google search and found brick&batten and am very thankful I did!

Want to see how we used the power of exterior paint to transform Dawn’s house with a flat roof? Keep reading to learn all about the design, the renovation process, and the end result.

The before

Dawn’s home is a Frank Lloyd Wright replica, built in 1961 by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s grandson, Elliott Roosevelt. She told us she recently replaced several elements of the dwelling, including the decking, railings, windows, roof, and fascia, so her primary goal was a “facelift via paint.”

The back of the home features a mix of wood and stucco siding and a small deck. Additionally, there are two balconies with railings that match the one on the deck.

The design

Our team designed two sides of Dawn’s home and offered her two color treatments. We went dark for the first option, with Benjamin Moore’s Black Forest Green (one of our favorite green exterior house colors) on the wood and stucco and Black, also by Benjamin Moore, on the trim, windows, gutters, and downspouts. We used the same colors on the back but added Benjamin Moore’s Cape May Cobblestone as an accent on the wood siding.

For the second option, we rendered the wood and stucco with Benjamin Moore’s Iron Mountain and kept the trim, windows, gutters, and downspouts Black. We carried these colors through to the back of the house as well.

Dawn used her free revision to see some additional paint colors on her home. Our first revised color palette consists of Cape May Cobblestone on the stucco and Black on the trim and fascia. On the back side, Cape May Cobblestone is also used on the wood, with Black on the accents.

We stuck with Cape May Cobblestone on the stucco in our second revised palette and used Benjamin Moore’s Bear Creek (one of our top exterior paint colors for 2023) on the trim and fascia. On the back of the home, Bear Creek was also used on the wood siding, windows, gutters, and downspouts.

We always recommend sampling and testing paint colors before committing. Factors such as natural lighting, undertones, and your property’s fixed elements will have a significant impact on how a color will appear on your exterior. Our friends at Samplize offer extra-large 9 x 14.75 inch peel-and-stick paint samples of the colors we love for exteriors. Order your ‘Real Paint, No Mess’ samples from Samplize here.

In addition to paint colors, we also recommended a few fresh design elements to complete Dawn’s home’s new look, including an awning over the entry door with wood paneling on the ceiling, black columns with a concrete base, and Corten steel planters

It was so very easy! All I did was answer a few questions and provide photos of our exterior. Then the team did the rest! It took a few iterations, but we are so very happy with the outcome. What we saw in the design photos was what we got, which was wonderful!

The process

Dawn contacted us in early 2022 and finished her home renovation in June of that year. Work didn’t actually begin until May, though, because “we had our contractor hold off starting the project until [the] Colorado winter had somewhat passed,” Dawn told us.

We used a contractor for the bulk of the job, and my husband helped a lot with some of the more challenging areas (i.e. gently painting behind our Virginia creeper that we have had for years and wanted to keep happy!).

The actual after

Dawn went with Bear Creek on the stucco and wood, with Iron Mountain on the trim, windows, gutters, downspouts, and fascia, and Black on the awning trim and column posts.

Dawn used the same colors on the back of the home. She also updated the planters and outdoor furniture on the deck. Instead of replacing the larger stone planter with a Corten steel one, she kept it as is.

We love it! It was a beautiful ‘facelift’ that we wish we’d done much sooner!

With a fresh color palette and some other minor updates, Dawn revitalized her 1960s house with a flat roof. Its curb appeal has improved drastically, and everyone is taking notice.

We have gotten a ton of compliments from family, friends, and neighbors. It was quite a transformation, and we are thankful for brick&batten.
