large lake house with multi-level deck

#1 // Lakefront lounging

Such a gorgeous lake house deserves a deck that makes a statement. Our designers suggested a multi-level deck with striking iron railings. Each level of the deck has room to relax, unwind, and entertain. The layout provides a physical barrier between the home and the lake without imposing a visual one, so the homeowners and their guests can take in the views while lounging outdoors.

#2 // A layout that flows

Multi-level deck ideas don’t always involve profound height differences. Our designers embraced subtle rises for this deck, resulting in a layout that flows easily. The steps between levels are embedded into the deck for a seamless look.

#3 // Sprawling spaces

The upper portion of this two-level deck stretches beyond the exterior walls of the home, for a sprawling outdoor living space. The levels aren’t connected by stairs, but they are by design. We love how the shape of both deck levels mimics the home’s triangular bump out.

#5 // Create zones

This backyard oasis covers all the bases. Jacuzzi? Check. Fireplace? Check. Lounge spaces? An outdoor cooking and dining area? This design has it. To make the layout more purposeful and distinct, we used a multi-level deck, creating defined zones for lounging, relaxation, and dining throughout.

#7 // Simple and stunning

Decks aren’t always elaborate. This design is both simple and functional. Each one of the back exterior doors opens up to a different level of the deck, making for accessible indoor-outdoor living. The intentional layout also features steps that lead directly to the backyard. This design is ideal for having lunch on the deck before heading down a few steps to enjoy the yard.

#8 // Mix materials for dynamism

For the backyard above, our designers used a variety of materials, including walkway pavers over pea gravel, wood plank flooring for the open-air deck, and wood and iron for the covered deck and balcony railings. The result is an enviable, dynamic outdoor living space.

#9 // Separate the levels

While most multi-level decks stagger the deck on one side of the home, or across the home’s entire width, this design splits things up. Our designers included deck spaces on each side of the house, plus a stairway and walkway leading to a raised deck in the center of the backyard.

#10 // Stairway to outdoor relaxation

When it comes to multi-level deck ideas, stairs are often an important element. This design features several sets of stairs: the steps leading from the side gate (on the left) to the backyard, two sets off the bottom level of the deck to the patio, and a couple of steps between the patio and the yard. To make the staircase connecting the upper and lower levels of the deck stand out, our designers suggested a distinctive mix of wood and iron materials.

#12 // Build around your pool

If you have a backyard pool, building a multi-level deck around it is a great way to get the best of both worlds: a pool deck and a separate deck for entertaining and unwinding. In this design, the main deck space is just outside the home and offers plenty of room for outdoor seating and dining. The main deck features two sets of stairs: one that leads to the side yard and one that leads to the bottom-level deck and pool. The layout is as functional as it is visually appealing.
