How do you use a trellis for landscaping?
A trellis is a type of latticework used on the exterior of your home to support climbing plants like ivy. Trellises can be freestanding and act as a screen, or they can be attached to a building.
While trellises, pergolas, and arbors all look similar, they are different exterior design details. A pergola is used to create a shaded area and features a lattice roof supported by beams. An arbor is an arch used over walkways or doorways that features trellis-like walls.

#1 // Wooden slat trellis
While many trellises are made from metal, this home uses an organic wooden style to tie into the home’s other design details. The wooden front door, fencing, and awning above the garage all feature the same warm, wooden wood finish as the trellis, creating beautiful cohesion throughout the exterior design.
The home’s creamy white paint and black accents provide the perfect backdrop for these wooden details, allowing them to stand out and create an elegant finish.
#2 // Trellis statement wall
The focal point of this beautiful stucco home is the striking, multi-level landscaping. And what better way to emphasize the lush plant life than with unique trellis ideas like a statement-making plant wall?
For this exterior, our designers took advantage of the home’s window-free façade closest to the street. To add visual interest, we added three double-wide trellises, allowing the ivy and plants to wind their way up the wall and create a striking focal point. An additional trellis on the far right is the finishing detail that provides optimal balance and symmetry.
#3 // Trellises and matching planter boxes
While trellises look beautiful on their own, this exterior pairs them with matching planter boxes to create an even bolder design statement. Four black planter boxes are attached to matching black trellises, plants spilling out the sides and climbing upward. This adds color, height, and dimension to the home, and it also elegantly complements the landscaped garden beds running along the home’s walkway.
With vertical white siding and plentiful wood cladding, this sleek exterior is a simple and sophisticated style. The black planters and trellises — along with the vibrant plant life — add a modern and colorful touch to the otherwise streamlined home.
#4 // Coordinating trellises
While trellises are sometimes used as a statement-making focal point, they can also be used to blend in with the existing exterior design. This home’s classic black-and-white color palette pairs perfectly with its traditional style. White siding and white painted brick contrast with the black roof, shutters, and window frames. To echo the other exterior details, two black trellises were added to the right side of the exterior between the two windows.
The black metal style matches perfectly with the shutters, while still adding height and depth. The trellises also blend beautifully with the lush front landscaping for a subtle but sophisticated detail.
We always recommend sampling and testing paint colors before committing. Factors such as natural lighting, undertones, and your property’s fixed elements will have a significant impact on how a color will appear on your exterior. Our friends at Samplize offer extra-large 9 x 14.75 inch peel-and-stick paint samples of the colors we love for exteriors. Order your ‘Real Paint, No Mess’ samples from Samplize here.
#5 // A single-trellis statement
While multiple trellises look beautiful and allow you to highlight your lovely landscaping, a single trellis can be equally as impactful. For this home exterior, we added a simple, black metal trellis in the center of the exterior to draw the eye and create a striking focal point.
Because the home’s entryway is off-center, the trellis creates a clear mid-point. This helps to create balance between the garage door on the left and the front door on the right. It also serves to draw the eye upward from the front garden bed, adding height and dimension to the single-story home.
#6 // Matching trellis and fencing
While trellises are beautiful on their own, they look extra stylish when paired with matching exterior details. For this home, our team recommended adding a trio of trellises to the façade closest to the street, emphasizing three existing arched alcoves. Along with these trellises, we added matching trellises along the right side of the exterior to serve as fencing, creating privacy and adding lush greenery.
#7 // Free-standing trellis
Most trellises can be found tucked into an existing garden bed or grassy area. But don’t let existing landscaping limit how you think about incorporating trellises into your home’s exterior design. For this exterior, our design team added a trellis to the home’s front exterior on a hardscaped walkway to incorporate additional greenery and add texture and dimension.
The black, diamond-shaped trellis matches with black window frames, a black front door, and a dark shingled roof. The trellis’s weaving greenery also helps tie in the front porch planters. Painted in Porpoise by Sherwin Williams, the exterior features a moody, dark color palette. The green of the plant life also complements the deep hues and adds beautiful contrast.
#8 // Coordinating trellis and awning
Incorporating multiple garden accents can help you bring extra interest to your home’s landscaping. This home features a classic lattice awning above the driveway, incorporating a traditional and timeless detail. A white lattice trellis complements the awning, allowing ivy to climb up and over the entryway and garage door. The window boxes above are the final charming detail.
These matching accents pair perfectly with the other white finishes to contrast with the blue siding and brick.
