Dormer windows

Dormer windows are a hallmark of traditional home design, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits. These charming architectural features break up the right-side roofline, adding depth and visual interest to the exterior. Beyond their curb appeal, dormers provide natural light and ventilation to upper-level or attic spaces, making them more livable and inviting.

Dormers’ versatility allow them to complement a variety of styles, from Colonial to Craftsman. In this design, their symmetrical placement creates a balanced look alongside the soft green shutters.

Covered entryways

As a highlight of traditional home design, covered porches blend practicality with timeless appeal. In this design, the covered porch provides a warm, sheltered welcome, protecting guests from the elements while adding dimension to the home’s façade. Framed with columns and a portico, the entrance draws attention to the front door, creating an inviting focal point. We opted for a front door with sidelights and a transom window, welcoming even more light to the space.

Front porches

Front porches are quintessential features of traditional home design, embodying a warm and welcoming vibe. These inviting spaces serve as transitional zones between the indoors and outdoors, perfect for relaxing, entertaining, or simply enjoying the view. Architecturally, the front porch in this design adds depth and balance to a the façade. We framed it with elegant columns and iron railing.

Our designers enhanced the traditional aesthetic with a straightforward black-and-white color scheme. The black shutters, light fixtures, and furniture on the main section coordinate with the awning, lights, and planters around the garage. This uniformity creates a neat, crisp aesthetic.

Shutters

Shutters are a timeless accent in traditional home design. Historically used to protect windows from harsh weather or provide privacy, modern shutters often serve as decorative features that frame windows and add texture to the façade. Our designers put a bold spin on this traditional exterior, blending different colors and textures for a dynamic aesthetic. We used a combination of red brick, deep green vertical siding, and brown shake siding.

Adding another material to the mix, we embraced wood shutters. The shutters complement the front door, and we added even more charm with a couple of flower boxes on the brick section of the house. The interplay of textures is anchored by the white trim, which adds a touch of brightness to the rich palette.

It’s all in the details

Because traditional home design is refined and open to interpretation, details and accents make all the difference. For this quaint traditional home, we loved the charm of the soft green brick and matched it with thoughtful accents. The white shutters and porch railing blend with the white trim, while the copper door awning and gutters coincide with the mounted lanterns and mailbox. Our designers even brought consistency to the landscaping, using a blend of shrubs, blooms, foliage, and rocks evenly throughout the beds.

Traditional rooflines

Styles like gabled, hipped, and steeply pitched roofs are not only visually appealing but also functional, helping to shed rain and snow efficiently in various climates. These rooflines often create symmetrical silhouettes that complement the overall balance of traditional design. This home features a blend of roof styles including slopes, a peak, a hipped section, and even dormers. The mix of rooflines creates plenty of visual interest, making the design stand out.

Limewashed brick

Limewashed brick is a traditional exterior design element that brings rustic charm and timeless character to a home. This finish, achieved by applying a mixture of lime, water, and pigment to brick surfaces, creates a soft, weathered look that ages gracefully over time. Unlike paint, limewash allows the natural texture of the brick to shine through while providing a breathable, protective layer. On this home, it brings a warm, whimsical vibe beautifully complemented by other classic elements like shutters and columns.

Arched doorways

Arched doorways add elegance and a touch of artistry to a traditional exterior. The soft curves of this entrance create visual interest and contrast with the straight, sharp lines of the portico.  These graceful arched opening also pairs beautifully with the arched glass front door. By blending functionality with an air of sophistication, arched doorways elevate a home’s curb appeal and lasting charm.

Open layouts

Open layouts have roots in traditional home design and contribute significantly to a home’s charm and livability. For this design, the walkway, patio, and driveway all flow into one another, creating a seamless look. This layout creates an inviting aesthetic and alongside the bold black siding, creates a sleek look. Consistency with design elements enhances the open look of the layout, too. From the wood window trim to the symmetrical windows, this exterior has an intentional aesthetic.

Elevated entrances

Traditional home design often emphasizes entrances that make a statement, giving curb appeal a direct boost. For this exterior, the arched openings lining the porch create an elegant ambiance. The wide walkway pavers lead into the stone steps, which transcend effortlessly into the porch area. Our designers also crowned the space in front of the door with a hanging copper lantern, drawing the eye.

Symmetrical façades

Symmetrical facades are quintessential to traditional home design, creating balance and harmony that naturally appeals to the eye. This design approach features evenly spaced windows, a centered front door, and aligned architectural elements that create a cohesive, polished look. Each side of the house features a bay window on the main level, capped by dormers on the upper portion. We also flanked the door with matching lanterns and planters, and neatly lined the walkway with shrubs.
