What does a sensory garden include?

A sensory garden is an outdoor space designed to engage all five senses, offering therapeutic tranquility. These gardens usually include visually appealing plants, such as vibrant flowers and textured foliage, aromatic herbs like lavender, and elements like rustling grasses or water features for sound. Soft, touchable plants invite exploration, while edible options, like fruit trees or herbs, provide a taste of nature. Not all sensory gardens engage all five senses, but they typically focus on at least two or three of them.

Embrace aromatics

Our designers amplified this ranch home with a sensory garden, marked with bursts of lavender throughout. Not only is the lavender lovely visually, but it introduces aromatics to the landscape, filling the air with soothing scents. Lavender is great for creating a calming atmosphere, and we placed it strategically throughout the design to keep the scent consistent. To optimize the tranquility the lavender evokes, we joined it with other elements.

We added a fountain and taller whispy plants to engage the senses through sound — the relaxing trickle of the water and the peaceful breeze blowing through the plants. We mixed different pavers, pea stone, and mulch around the garden to create a dynamic appearance that’s visually captivating. The textures and materials in the sensory garden complement the natural stone on the house for a cohesive aesthetic.

Cultivate a flowy layout

When creating your sensory garden, you don’t have to confine yourself to one small, specific section of your yard. Instead, consider creating a garden that sprawls. In this design, we created a flowing layout that hugs both the front patio and the walkway. We included a variety of textures and colors, including some soft foliage to explore and touch, whispy plants to catch the sound of the wind, and lavender to give off a relaxing scent.

Complementing the whimsical aesthetic of the home and the serene layout of the sensory garden, we added a porch swing and lounge chairs nearby. The outdoor furniture provides the perfect spot to take in the views.

Carve out a serene space

If you do want a defined space for your sensory garden, there are tons of ways to effectively achieve that. In this design, we zoned off a circular section in the middle of the front yard and transformed it into a sensory garden. In the middle, we added a trio of fountains, delivering dynamic sounds of water trickling from one spot to the next. We combined different textures and shades of green for the shrubs and foilage, leaning into visual contrast.

Emphasize self-care

At brick&batten, we offer virtual exterior design services to businessess too! For the yard of this wellness center, a sensory garden makes perfect sense. Our designers surrounded the relaxing sauna and hot tub with lush plants with foliage that’s smooth to the touch. We also implemented a subtle fountain for serene sounds, and fire features for added ambiance.

In this design, we took a holistic approach to a sensory garden, breaking up its core elements to weave its benefits into the entire scope of the yard, rather than confining it to one zone. Of course, we also implemented a lounge area to enjoy all of the elements at play.

Integrate a walkway

Embedding a garden that appeals to your senses near a walkway is so impactful. In this design, we landscaped along the walkway, including a variety of plants and blooms to appeal to touch, hearing, and sight. We heightened the sense of sound even more, adding a fountain to the garden area.

Homeowners and visitors enjoy the elements as they walk toward the entrance, and the walkway comes to a head at the flowy patio space. This layout provides the perfect path to submerge your senses in all that surrounds. On the patio, near the garden, we added some chairs to optimize relaxation.

Poolside sensory garden

What better space to add a sensory garden than near a plunge pool? This backyard oasis is brought to life by plants that appeal to the senses. The garden surrounds both sides of a walkway, marked by sleek pavers. We included wispy plants and smooth, sleek foliage for a dynamic display. From the garden, you can take in the sounds and sights of the pool, for a backyard experience that’s both tranquil and functional.

Optimize bright blooms

Incorporating a mix of bright blooms, aromatic herbs, and wispy plants in your sensory garden creates a dynamic, engaging landscape that stimulates the senses. The vibrant flowers we recommended for this garden bring bold splashes of color, drawing the eye. We complemented these bright blooms with delicate, wispy plants, which add movement and texture to the garden.

The contrast between the vivid colors and the soft, airy foliage not only pleases the eye but also enhances the sensory experience, as the gentle swaying of the grasses in the breeze introduces a calming, rhythmic motion that soothes the mind. We also added a whimsical white pergola to the garden space, adorning it with more lush flowers for a cohesive appearance.

Get creative with placement

Curb appeal starts at the curb, and sometimes you’ve got to make a statement right at the edge of your property. Here, we added a sensory garden near the mailbox, creating a compelling space that’s visually evident right from the road. Plus, if the homeowner needs a calm space to unwind after being greeted by a handful of bills, this garden’s placement is quite convenient.

Create a seating space

Adding a subtle seating space near a sensory garden creates a peaceful sanctuary where you can fully satisfy your senses. The simple bench in this garden is the optimal place to pause, relax, and take in the surrounding beauty. Positioned to capture the best views and scents, this seating area provides an intimate way to enjoy the garden’s blooms and textures, soothing sounds, and calming aromas.
