Is yellow a good paint color?

Yellow is a vibrant, energetic hue that is an often-overlooked option when it comes to home exteriors. This beautiful hue, however, is known for boosting one’s mood and bringing feelings of happiness. Yellow also has several other positive associations, like warmth, energy, and hope, making it a wonderful option for home exteriors. It is often grouped with other warm colors, like red and orange, when deciding on paint colors. We share the best of all three below.

#1 // Marigold by Sherwin Williams

If you’re looking for a home exterior that makes a bold statement, consider incorporating Marigold by Sherwin Williams into your palette. This warm, orange-yellow shade is almost a perfect replica of the flower that lends it its name.

With a light reflective value of 30, Marigold is a mid-toned hue that adds depth and drama — without a lot of darkness. Consider pairing it with a warm white, like Shoji White by Sherwin Williams, for a welcoming and cohesive exterior aesthetic. Or, for a bolder look, pair it with a deep charcoal gray like Iron Mountain by Benjamin Moore as pictured above for a dark and moody color palette.

#2 // Kingdom Gold by Sherwin Williams

This opulent hue is the ideal way to add an old-world, regal feel to your exterior. The deeply saturated shade delivers a striking finish for a home exterior — which is why it is sometimes avoided. Perfect for traditional architecture like Victorians, this bold color will add a fun and festive feel to any exterior.

While it pairs well with whites and other neutrals, you can also combine Kingdom Gold with a more unexpected shade like Naval by Sherwin Williams for a unique approach. Or, if you’re feeling that an entire yellow exterior is too bold, opt instead for a bright pop on your front door.

#3 // Pomegranate by Benjamin Moore

This rich, warm red is a lush color that is equal parts modern and traditional. Inspired by the maroon hue of its namesake fruit, this paint shade has an LRV of 10.14, delivering a decidedly dark look.

It also has a color-changing effect depending on the time of day — in ambient morning light, Pomegranate appears more pink, while it skews more orange in different afternoon sun. Pair it with a classic white shade to create high contrast and let this red hue really pop.

#4 // Electric Orange by Benjamin Moore

Add vibrance and energy to your exterior with this vivid orange hue. The eye-catching color is a saturated, warm orange shade that won’t go unnoticed. Perfect for front doors, shutters, or other exterior accents, Electric Orange pairs beautifully with a range of neutral shades like gray, white, or beige — which is probably why it’s one of Benjamin Moore’s best-selling orange hues.

While this shade has surprising versatility, we recommend not pairing it with ultra-deep gray or black shades to avoid an unintentional Halloween-inspired color palette.

We always recommend sampling and testing paint colors before committing. Factors such as natural lighting, undertones, and your property’s fixed elements will have a significant impact on how a color will appear on your exterior. Our friends at Samplize offer extra-large 9 x 14.75 inch peel-and-stick paint samples of the colors we love for exteriors. Order your ‘Real Paint, No Mess’ samples from Samplize here.

#5 // Cottage Red by Sherwin Williams

This classic red shade will instantly give your home a more traditional feel. Ideal for cottages, Cape Cods, or Colonials, this paint has deep brown undertones, giving it a picturesque barn-like look. With an LRV of 6.69, this shade is definitely dark, so we recommend pairing it with an accent color on the lighter side to create a beautiful balance. Soft white hues like White Duck (pictured above) or Toque White by Sherwin Williams make the perfect partner.

#6 // Peach Fuzz by Sherwin Williams

If you want an orange paint color but are after something more subtle, Peach Fuzz by Sherwin Williams is the perfect compromise. This soft orange hue will add life and energy to your exterior without making too bold of a statement. With an LRV of 66 and warm, welcoming undertones, it will brighten up your exterior and create a modern statement. Pair it with one of our favorite white hues for a more muted look, or opt instead for a deep, copper-colored accent for a bolder finish.

#7 // Yellow Bisque by Benjamin Moore

This bright, light yellow hue is a fun, energetic option for home exteriors. The buttercup hue has a hint of beige undertones, muting it slightly so it doesn’t get too vibrant. Part of the Benjamin Moore Classics® collection, Yellow Bisque is an especially beautiful choice for traditional or Victorian homes.

If you’re hesitant to paint your entire exterior yellow, this creamy shade is versatile enough to use as a prominent accent color in your palette. Incorporate it on shutters, the front door, or other exterior design elements for a lovely, soft finish. For a unique palette, consider mixing it with a creamy off-white like Ballet White by Benjamin Moore and a mid-toned blue-gray hue for a modern look.

#8 // Invigorate by Sherwin Williams

If you want something bold, Invigorate by Sherwin Williams definitely fits the bill. This vibrant orange hue will add a colorful pop to any home exterior. Perfect for front doors or other exterior accents, it looks especially stylish when paired with neutral tones like Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams or a creamy white hue like Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore. If you’re feeling especially bold, you can incorporate a contrasting color, like Benjamin Moore’s Slate Blue.
