In this design, we complemented the panel siding painted Benjamin Moore, Stonecutter with cedar and stone accents. Among the mounted cylinder light fixtures and other accents, the wood leans into a modern aesthetic. We implemented landscaping throughout the design along with natural stone for a look that’s in touch with the surrounding environment.
Tying the cedar section of the house in with the rest of the design, our design team recommended a Canyon Ridge Garage Door by Clopay and Riva front door. Notice the wooden gates on either side of the house don’t match exactly. You don’t need a Rooms to Go situation. Adding different textures and shades creates a custom look that’s intentional.
Create a welcoming entrance
Cedar siding has an uncanny ability to infuse exteriors with warmth. This mid-century modern home exudes a welcoming vibe with the Wasabi color door and large eave. Keeping the landscape simple and interesting pavers connecting the driveway, all eyes are drawn to the front door. This entrance to feel particularly inviting, so we fine-tuned the details. We covered the space surrounding the front door with cedar siding from Nichiha in Redwood, flanked the entrance with a planter, and one of our favorite lights, the Troy Darwin Wall Sconce. It’s all in the details to make a house feel like home. We wanted a simple, usable, and relaxing outdoor space, where parents and kids can wait for the bus or gather with a neighbor to drink morning coffee. The Modernist Wall Fountain by Restoration Hardware and comfortable outdoor seating add to the functionality of the space.
Complement cedar siding with other materials
When I look at this home design my heart screams YES! If cedar siding appeals to you because of its natural nature, it works really well with other earthy materials. Pairing cedar with complementary materials enhances its natural beauty while adding dimension. Let’s break it down: There is Revere Pewter on the brick, with Iron Ore lap siding. Both are warm colors that will always work with wood accents. You will also see the chevron pattern siding under the porch. There is nothing simple about this home design; however, it all works together in a beautiful way. Because the space allowed, the design team chose a one of a kind, eye catching door by The Pivot Door Company. Landscaping, house numbers, and modern awning just add to the vibe.
For trim, opt for natural paint colors that highlight cedar’s warmth without being overwhelming. Earthy tones like soft greige, warm charcoal or soft black blend seamlessly, keeping the design grounded and sophisticated. Even black or charcoal trim can provide a striking contrast, adding a modern edge while allowing cedar’s richness to shine. By choosing materials that enhance rather than compete with cedar, you create a harmonious exterior that feels both refined and inviting.

The materials we used on the house tie in with the patio and landscaping beautifully. We incorporated rocks throughout and used wood doors throughout the design for an intentional feel.

The wood accent on the doors, columns, and gable create a unique feel with traditional elements. I love the pool and hanging chairs; however, my favorite part of this design are the large Real Craft doors leading into the house from the right side patio and the copper cupola with the fun East Coast Weathervane of the chicken. The design team embraced a simple approach to giving the home a natural and family oriented feel.
