When she bought her home in the fall of 2022, Dawn S. knew her exterior had potential. However, she was struggling to see past the existing monochromatic neutral color palette. Dawn’s goal was to infuse the exterior with a modern farmhouse style that was equally elevated, elegant, and rustic. But between choosing new siding, selecting paint colors, and adding accents, she wasn’t sure where to start.

The before
After purchasing her home in October of 2022, Dawn was eager to make some changes to its exterior. The Tennessee home had off-white siding, white accents, and a brown roof that didn’t stand out. She knew, however, her exterior had the potential to be an eye-catching addition to the neighborhood.
When looking for a partner to bring her exterior modern farmhouse to life, she saw brick&batten’s past work on social media. Dawn instantly knew that our team would be able to make her vision a reality. After reaching out to our team and learning about our process, it solidified that brick&batten was the perfect solution for her project.
The design
To give Dawn’s home an elevated, modern farmhouse feel, our design team first recommended upgrading the entire exterior to vertical siding. This smooth fiber cement siding offers the best blend of aesthetics and durability. Made from a mix of wood pulp and cement, the low-maintenance siding is rot-resistant and pest-proof. It isn’t impacted by extreme temperature swings, making it the ideal option for Dawn’s home in the unpredictable climate of Tennessee.
To finish the siding, we recommended the timeless shade of Dover White by Sherwin Williams. As one of our long-time favorite white hues, Dover White is the perfect warm, soft white. With an LRV of 83, this creamy shade pairs well with natural accents like wood, stone, or brick. Using this shade on the new vertical siding for Dawn’s home lends the exterior a charming, inviting feel.
We also recommended Gray Area by Sherwin Williams for the fascia and brick to round out her neutral color palette. This stone gray paint color walks the line between gray and beige. As a result, it’s a versatile, earth-toned hue that complements nearly any palette. With an LRV of 39, it also has a beautiful, mid-toned depth that offsets Dover White to create a beautiful and subtle contrast.
To complete the design and add a rustic feel, our designers recommended deep wood and wood-look finishes. This organic option can be seen on the garage door and front door, along with wooden beams and supports along the windows and front porch. A black shingle roof, porch railing, house numbers, and window frames round out the design, along with colonial-inspired wall lanterns. The resulting look strikes the perfect balance between modern and timeless.
Dawn loved the initial design so much that she didn’t even need to use her included free revision — she was ready to start the work to transform her exterior right away.

The process
After receiving her final design deliverable, Dawn and her family hired a local contractor to complete the work on the exterior. They began renovations in March of 2023, about six months after they moved into their home. Just a few months later in June of 2023, the design was completed.
Dawn and her team made a few small changes to their brick&batten design based on architectural limitations and material availability. Even with these tweaks, the completed exterior beautifully brought to life the desired modern farmhouse exterior.
The actual after
Once the project was completed, the transformation was so impressive that Dawn’s home was nearly unrecognizable. The vertical siding in a creamy white contrasts beautifully with the dark roof and railing to create a stylish contrast. Warm wooden beams, a carriage house garage door, elegant light fixtures, and black window frames work together to strike the perfect balance between rustic and refined.

It’s hard to pick one thing as a favorite design element, but if we had to choose, it would be the front porch. It’s so welcoming and relaxing, and it’s where we enjoy watching the Tennessee sunsets.
Their home’s exterior transformation was completed less than a year after they initially moved it. This fast progress helped Dawn and her family feel like they put their stamp on the space. After the updates, the exterior now beautifully reflects Dawn’s style. The striking exterior offers a welcoming, warm, and inviting place for her and her family to call home.
Dawn is even looking forward to continuing her exterior upgrade over the next year. She and her family plan to transform their home’s landscaping to match the suggestions from the brick&batten team. She plans to add lush greenery and flowers in front of the porch, along the front walkway, and around the side of the home — in addition to sleek black planters on either side of the garage door — as recommended in their design deliverable.
