3 Reasons Why Painting in the Fall is a Smart Play

Thinking about painting your home’s exterior this Fall?  To exterior designers like brick&batten, Fall can be the best time to paint the exterior of your house.  Late spring and summer are classic exterior painting months as precipitation is low and warm temperatures.  But how late into Fall or possibly Winter can you take your outdoor painting?  Let’s get into it! 

  1. Improved paint technology allows you to paint in temperatures as cool as 35 degrees with certain types of paints.  Therefore, in Northern states, you can stop around November.  In Southern states, stop around December.  
  2. Fall can be the best time to paint because of the difference between high and low temperatures.  The fluctuations aren’t as big from morning to night, making Fall a more desirable time to paint. 
  3. Pricing can be dramatically less in the Fall as the demand for painters drops significantly.  With less customers, painters are far more likely to give a deal on getting the exterior painting done.  

Depending on where you live geographically, Fall can deliver temperatures that are perfect for outdoor painting.  For example, if you live in New York City, average temperatures in October are 47 degrees which is fine for painting.  If you live in Columbia, South Carolina, average lows are 47 degrees in November delivering you another month of safe painting.  In addition, many states in the South, stay warm year round!

Another important factor when painting the exterior is moisture.  Paint should only be applied to a dry surface.  Rain, snow, or humidity can impact the application and longevity of paint.  After the house is wet, give it ample time to dry before painting.  In addition, the house will be pressure washed before paint goes on.  Make sure the house has plenty of time to dry before undertaking the first coat.
