Trend Forecasting

As design experts, we excel at — and enjoy! — trend forecasting. In 2024, we expect white paint colors to make a major comeback — and not just on farmhouses.

In addition to white, green hues and other colors inspired by nature are going to continue to be popular in the new year. Light greens such as Sea Salt (seen on the home above) will transition into being popular exterior colors as much as they are interior colors.

Additionally, dark and moody paint colors are still very much in. Our expectation is that we’ll see more of this trend in 2024, and a lot of our designs will incorporate more charcoal and near-black colors.

If we’ve piqued your interest with our trend predictions, then keep reading to discover our top picks for the best Sherwin Williams exterior paint colors of 2024! (And if you want to see our list of the best Sherwin Williams paint colors for 2023, you can do so here.)

Two story stucco home rendered with Aloof Gray by Sherwin Williams, white windows, wood door, and a tall arched portico.

#1 // Aloof Gray

Aloof Gray is a light and airy green-gray. It’s a mid-toned hue with an LRV of 58, so it’s not too bright or too dark for any environment. (Not sure what LRV means? We break down everything you need to know, including why it’s important to consider LRV when selecting a paint color for your home, here.)

Even as a green, Aloof Gray is pretty versatile. It pairs well with blacks, whites, grays, and browns. Brick and natural stone elements also look great, as well as textured siding like cedar shake. Although we like to use Aloof Gray on cottages and traditional homes, with the right color pairings, even contemporary homes can be elevated with this popular color.

Amazing Gray by Sherwin Williams on a traditional farmhouse with black shutters and a tall natural brick chimney.

#2 // Amazing Gray

Amazing Gray is a true greige our designers adore. We expect to see more greige exterior paint colors like Amazing Gray being embraced into 2024.

With brown and the slightest green undertones, Amazing Gray looks wonderful as an accent color with darker greiges like Sherwin Williams’ Urban Bronze. Trim colors that pair well with Amazing Gray include soft whites like Alabaster, also by Sherwin Williams, or for a tone-on-tone look, a lighter greige could be applied. To create a timeless color palette, try black shutters and natural brick as shown in the design above.

A home rendered in Gauntlet Gray, one of the best Sherwin Williams exterior paint colors 2024 has to offer

#3 // Gauntlet Gray

There’s a reason why Gauntlet Gray is one of Sherwin Williams’ top 50 colors. It’s a beautiful deep and rich hue that makes for a huge transformation on any style home. Farmhouses and modern homes alike are great canvases for Gauntlet Gray. Although its color pairings are limited, the available options are stunning. Off-white trim, wood tones, black, and different variations of stone all accentuate Gauntlet Gray for a stunning exterior.

WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND SAMPLING AND TESTING PAINT COLORS BEFORE COMMITTING. FACTORS SUCH AS NATURAL LIGHTING, UNDERTONES, AND YOUR PROPERTY’S FIXED ELEMENTS WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON HOW A COLOR WILL APPEAR ON YOUR EXTERIOR. OUR FRIENDS AT SAMPLIZE OFFER EXTRA-LARGE 9 X 14.75 INCH PEEL-AND-STICK PAINT SAMPLES OF THE COLORS WE LOVE FOR EXTERIORS. ORDER YOUR ‘REAL PAINT, NO MESS’ SAMPLES FROM SAMPLIZE HERE.

Fawn Brindle by Sherwin Williams with white trim and wood accents.

#4 // Fawn Brindle

As previously mentioned, greige has been and will continue to be a go-to color family for our exterior designers. We predict Fawn Brindle will be a paint color we’ll use more in the future. It’s a gorgeous darker greige with green-gray undertones that keep the hue soft.

Our designers like to apply Fawn Brindle to mountain homes, cottages, and other home styles that are normally surrounded by a lush landscape. Soft whites, black, and browns are great accent colors, as well as stained wood, stone with brown and gray color variations, and copper fixtures.

Shell White by Sherwin Williams on a large, modern stucco home, with black doors and windows.

#5 // Shell White

White has always been a classic, but other color families have taken over the spotlight in recent years. We think that’ll change in 2024 as white hues are once again becoming popular for home exteriors. Shell White, a warm white with barely noticeable peachy undertones, is one of our go-to shades of white.

Its LRV is 83, so it’s bright, but not stark. Even in shaded locations, color shift shouldn’t be an issue. However, keep in mind that the brighter the white, the more it can reflect the surrounding environment, like trees for example. If you’re looking to keep things simple yet eye-catching, Shell White could be an option.

Pure White by Sherwin Williams on a farmhouse with wood columns, wood corbels, and stone accents.

#6 // Pure White

Pure White, a quintessential classic white, is a popular hue you can pair with just about anything. It has a soft yellow undertone to keep it from being too stark, and color pairing options are wide. Its LRV is 84, so it’s just a tad brighter than Shell White. Pure White is a go-to color for our designers for trim, but we’ve created many designs with it as the central color as well. This is a you-can’t-go-wrong type of hue.

White Duck by Sherwin Williams on a traditional home with dark shutters and a brick herringbone walkway.

#7 // White Duck

White Duck creates a timeless look when paired with browns and charcoal blacks. Even muted shades of green could look amazing as an accent color. Considered an off-white, this creamy shade is lovely on traditional homes and farmhouses alike. We particularly like to see White Duck with wood cladding, copper fixtures, a darker trim, red brick, and stone.

Greek Villa by Sherwin Williams on a brick cottage with light green accents and black light fixtures.

#8 // Greek Villa

Another classic, Greek Villa has plenty of charm. Our designers have used Greek Villa on many virtual designs, and it never fails to impress. Its versatility is just one reason we keep coming back to this warm-white. It’s a wonderful hue for Mediterranean, cottage, and traditional-style homes, and it can be applied to just about any cladding material.

Since it’s warm, other warm colors are great partners for Greek Villa, as are wood design elements, copper, and stone with brown colors. Since it’s also bright, cool colors play nicely with Greek Villa too.

A cool green paint color on a rancher styler home with a wood garage door.

#9 // Pewter Green

Pewter Green is a calming green with cool undertones. With an LRV of 12, it’s a touch darker than some of our other go-to greens but just as lovely. Homes with wood or metal accents would look great painted with this unique green. If you want to add a touch of elegance to your exterior, put Pewter Green at the top of your list.

Rock Bottom by Sherwin Williams on a two story home set in a lush landscape.

#10 // Rock Bottom

If your home is nestled in the woods, lakeside, or surrounded by a green landscape, Rock Bottom might be the perfect color for you. It’s moody, bold, and a conversation starter. We like to see Rock Bottom on cabins, waterfront homes, Craftsman-style houses, and even contemporary home styles.

Rock Bottom pairs nicely with wood elements, and we also love to use it in conjunction with black. A bright white trim also looks great with Rock Bottom, as demonstrated above.

A home rendered in Sherwin Williams' Dark Night

#11 // Dark Night

This dark blue is inky and full of mystery. Dark Night is a rich hue with slate undertones and a fantastic option for those wanting a moody exterior.

Dark Night pairs wonderfully with black, soft whites with no undertones, and gray. In the design above, the white windows and shutters really pop against the siding rendered in Dark Night.

Cyberspace by Sherwin Williams on a contemporary farmhouse with gray stone accents and black windows

#12 // Cyberspace

Cyberspace is a great choice for sleek color palettes on contemporary and modern homes. It could look equally as stylish on a cabin or Craftsman style home as well. An example of color pairings and design elements for Cyberspace can be seen above. Wood cladding used carefully, gray and charcoal stone, and black windows modernize this home while still maintaining a rooted-in-nature feel.

Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams on a beach style home with mahogany wood door and white garage door.

#13 // Sea Salt

Sea Salt has been a popular Sherwin Williams paint color for years. Reminiscent of the ocean and salty air, this color will help you achieve a relaxing and tranquil exterior.

Beach homes and homes with stucco siding benefit from this easygoing hue. The best complementing color for Sea Salt is a crisp or soft white. To keep things light and breezy, use black sparingly. Stick to light building materials like the stone above, limewashed brick, and copper.

Light green paint color on a small mid-century modern home.

#14 // Oyster Bay

Oyster Bay and Sea Salt are very similar, but Oyster Bay has gray undertones. In darker settings, those gray undertones could be more noticeable, but not enough to overshadow its green profile. Oyster Bay, like Sea Salt, has a calming effect and is a great choice for homes located near the water. For the most part, white is the best option for trim, and light wood tones help to add warmth to a color palette featuring Oyster Bay.

Cape Cod style home with thick white trim, dark gray cedar shake siding, and lush landscaping.
