Sherwin Williams’ Dried Thyme: The specs

A darker green with an LRV of 21, Dried Thyme’s appearance changes considerably from sunshine to shade. In the light, Dried Thyme will show off the chalky herbal hues that earned it its name. In the shade, the green can appear deeper, not as muted, but still just as beautiful. Dried Thyme has the slightest blue undertone, and, although it may not be that noticeable, it does contribute to it leaning cool rather than warm.

Recommended applications for Dried Thyme

Wood and stone accent materials (including brick!) accentuate earthy tones like Dried Thyme and also help to add warmth to a color palette. Hues like browns, blacks, and creamy to bright whites are our designer’s choices for accent colors with this shade. Although Dried Thyme looks wonderful on contemporary or traditional homes, this outdoors-inspired hue really shines on cabins and lakeside homes.

Dried Thyme color pairings

We mentioned Dried Thyme pairs well with brick. Well, it also pairs nicely with stone. The design above is a good example of Dried Thyme as an accent color — our designers used it on the shutters. The contrasting gray-green on the brick is Squirrel Tail by Benjamin Moore, with brown undertones that pull from the variations in the stone cladding, including the hints of charcoal gray. White Dove by Benjamin Moore on the portico columns, fascia, and soffits keeps the appearance light.

We love this subtle tone-on-tone palette. Aloof Gray by Sherwin Williams is the field color on the home above. Its creamy green undertones coordinate beautifully with Dried Thyme on accents. Wood elements, including the fencing that anchors the home on each side, lend warmth to the façade.

Check out this stunner. Our designers used Dried Thyme on the home above, with Benjamin Moore’s Seapearl on the trim, soffits, and eaves. The chunky white trim on the turret draws the eye up, showcasing the grand height of this 4-story home. Next, we played on Dried Thyme’s cool undertones with the stone cladding, which also provides texture and dimension. This color palette would fit right in on a beach house or Craftsman-style home, as well.

WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND SAMPLING AND TESTING PAINT COLORS BEFORE COMMITTING. Alternatives to Dried Thyme

With the increasing popularity of green exterior paint, there are now quite a few contenders out there to consider. Below are a couple of our other favorite green hues, in case you’re stumped or need a little extra inspiration.

Aegean Olive and Black Beauty on a rustic home

Benjamin Moore’s Aegean Olive

Aegean Olive by Benjamin Moore is a darker green with brown undertones that add a moody depth. It has an LRV of 11.54 vs. Dried Thyme’s 21, so it is significantly darker. It’s only fitting that Aegean Olive tops our list of dark olive green house designs, and also earned a spot as one of our top Benjamin Moore exterior paint colors of 2022.

Benjamin Moore’s Sage Mountain

Sage Mountain by Benjamin Moore is actually considered a taupe with green undertones. Coming in lighter than Dried Thyme with an LRV of 28.5, it’s more traditional and timeless. In the rendering above, you can see Sage Mountain on the top half of the home, with Aegean Olive on the bottom half for the perfect tone-on-tone contrast. Sage Mountain could also look great on coastal homes and cottages.

The bottom line on Dried Thyme by Sherwin Williams

Green exterior paint colors have recently been on the rise, and Dried Thyme is just one reason why. Using green on your home can add a calming feel to the exterior, inviting you inside to relax. Darker accents help modernize the hue, while white can provide a more traditional and crisp aesthetic. Despite Dried Thyme’s somewhat limited color pairings, it’s still quite versatile in application. Dried Thyme is a lovely choice for shutters, doors, or siding alongside red brick, which is a challenging material for color pairing options. This flexibility and adaptability make it a solid choice for an exterior paint color. If you’d like to see Dried Thyme on your own home before committing, we’re here to help.
