Similar to how homeowners often update their house’s exterior before selling it to attract buyers, it’s important to consider your apartment aesthetic. Simple updates can help catch the eye of potential renters and keep current tenants happy. From changing the exterior paint color to modernizing the entryway, there are countless ways you can improve your apartment aesthetic. And the updates will increase the value of your property at the same time. Below, we share some of our favorite apartment building updates.

An aesthetically appealing apartment building is important, but with so many elements to consider, getting started can feel overwhelming. Don’t let that keep you from realizing your apartment building’s potential! Enlist our expert designers to help you achieve your desired apartment aesthetic.

A before and after of an aesthetic apartment complex

#1 // Make a Statement with a Mural

While there’s plenty to love about this design, the mural of a mountain landscape particularly stands out. This unique feature isn’t something you see on most apartment buildings, and its nature-inspired vibe plays well with the structure’s other natural elements, like the Woodtone siding and paint color Iron Ore by Benjamin Moore.

#2 // Go Industrial with Mixed Metals

In the rendering above, our designers incorporated plenty of metal accents to create contrast against the light façade. The result is a chic, industrial-style apartment aesthetic.

Iron columns on the lower level, an iron breeze block wall to the left of the structure, and Corten steel planters on each end of the building are a few of our favorite metal elements from this design.

#3 // Embrace the Dark Side

Several of our top exterior house colors for 2022 were deeply dark shades, like Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron, used in the above design. Our designers stuck with the dark theme and used Benjamin Moore’s Black on the building’s trim. We also added warmth by mixing in wood on the door, awning, and skirting of the raised patio.

If you’re still not sold on a black exterior paint color, maybe one of these stunning black houses will sway you over to the dark side.

#4 // Beautify Your Brick

When you want to update a brick building’s exterior without replacing the masonry, try a fresh coat of paint. Of course, white is the color most people gravitate toward when painting brick, but we say don’t be afraid to mix it up. We love that our designers went with a darker shade for this grand apartment building. They used Benjamin Moore’s Deep Creek on the brick and went for a light contrast on the eaves and soffit with Revere Pewter.

#5 // Add Style with Stone

Light-colored stone accents, like the cladding on this multi-residential building, are one of our favorite home exterior trends for 2022. When light-colored stone siding is paired with darker accents and paint colors, it creates a sleek and modern feel.

A small apartment complex with brightly colored doors

#6 // Striking Shades

We love a well-placed pop of color — and your renters will, too. With the apartment doors painted in Benjamin Moore’s Wasabi and Galápagos Turquoise, this apartment aesthetic stays true to its 1960s roots but with a modern, youthful twist. Next, natural elements, like the cedar columns and wood paneling, add warmth and bring an inviting feeling to this building.

#7 // Create Contrast

While we love a monochrome look, sometimes a structure needs contrast. That’s exactly what our designers provided for this large apartment complex. On the one side is the light siding and trim, painted in Sherwin Williams’ Alabaster, a warm off-white hue, and the limewash brick. These cladding choices create a striking contrast with the design’s darker elements, like the trim painted in Benjamin Moore’s Graphite and the black roof shingles.

A rendering of a clubhouse exterior

#8 // Enhance the Entrance

Get potential renters excited about your property before they even step foot in the door with an inviting entrance. Our designers took this apartment complex’s dated clubhouse and elevated it with sophisticated elements. A custom, contemporary front door, sleek awning, and modern sconces all amplify this structure’s entry area.
