Painted Brick for Traditional Georgia Home

When Nancy T. bought her Georgia home in September 2022, she knew she wanted to refresh its exterior but wasn’t exactly sure where to begin. She liked the idea of painted brick but didn’t know what other design updates to implement. After finding brick&batten online, Nancy enlisted us to help.

I have not one iota of creative decorating talent or confidence in my body, so [I] needed someone who has experience.

Keep reading to learn about Nancy’s experience with brick&batten and see her exterior transformation from start to finish.

The Before

Nancy’s home is located in a subdivision of houses all built in the mid-80s, and she described it as an “older, tired-looking home.” The home’s exterior is a combination of brick and James Hardie siding, the latter of which can be found on the sides of the home. Nancy’s main goal in working with us was to make her exterior more welcoming and boost her home’s curb appeal.

Some neighbors have updated, so we wanted to get something that looked nice but not a copycat to the neighbors.

The Design

Keeping in mind that Nancy wanted her design to feature painted brick, we recommended Benjamin Moore’s London Fog on the brick and dormer siding. Our designers paired this with trim and columns rendered in Benjamin Moore’s White Dove and shutters in Black Beauty. London Fog is a neutral hue with soft gray undertones, and we love how the off-white trim pops against it. The darker shutters and garage door also create a nice contrast.

We didn’t stop at paint color recommendations though. Our design also features an updated entry area — complete with a new front door, light fixtures, and stairway leading up to it — plus a custom garage door, faux copper gutters, fresh landscaping, and new, larger shutters.

We also provided Nancy with a design option that kept her home’s natural brick. In this version, the shutter color and other design recommendations remained the same, but we suggested Benjamin Moore’s Cloud Cover for the trim, columns, and dormer siding.

We always recommend sampling and testing paint colors before committing. Factors such as natural lighting, undertones, and your property’s fixed elements will have a significant impact on how a color will appear on your exterior. Our friends at Samplize offer extra-large 9 x 14.75 inch peel-and-stick paint samples of the colors we love for exteriors. Order your ‘Real Paint, No Mess’ samples from Samplize here.

The Process

Nancy said the process of placing her order with brick&batten and implementing our design recommendations was easy.

I took pictures, sent them in along with my goals, and we had a brief discussion. Within a few weeks, I had two possible color schemes and all the details with recommended vendors as samples.

After receiving her design, Nancy shared it with her HOA so they could approve her desired changes.

I could use the rendering with my HOA to show them my intent as I sought approval for the changes. They could provide feedback on what was accepted or not. [It was] so much easier to communicate with a picture.

To bring her brick&batten design to life, Nancy worked with the same team who helped her update her home’s interior. The exterior renovation started in November with the painting, and Nancy said everything was wrapped up in early March.

The Actual After

Nancy ended up moving forward with the painted brick design option and followed the rendering quite closely. She took our paint color recommendations and purchased the front door we suggested. She also bought a similar garage door and shutters.

The deliverable was used consistently with everyone. We used it as a roadmap and guide to the final outcome and made adjustments as needed.

While she didn’t opt for the gabled roof over the entry, she took inspiration from our design when updating her front door.
