Dated to Dramatic: A Stunning Colorado Exterior Transformation

Some exterior renovations make your home feel newer. Others completely change the feel of your entire home. This gorgeous Colorado home falls firmly into that second category.

What once started as a dated exterior with heavy brick, muted colors, and disconnected architectural elements became a warm, mountain-inspired home with striking materials and a dramatic glow-up.

Here’s how the magic happened.

Before and after of a Colorado home with brick&batten's virtual exterior design service.

It All Started With a (Virtual) Vision

This homeowner came to brick&batten looking for a comprehensive plan to modernize his home’s exterior. He didn’t want to lose its warmth or character, but he knew it needed some big changes to really stand out.

The original house felt heavy and dated. The brick dominated the facade, and the color palette lacked contrast. The architecture didn’t accurately reflect the modern mountain aesthetic the homeowner wanted.

The homeowner participated in a Zoom consultation, where he was able to partner with our designers to bring his vision to life. Then, he received the cohesive plan he was looking for, complete with a virtually designed “after” photo and a full, detailed list of materials and paint colors.

According to The Roofing & Siding Company, the Colorado-based contractors hired to make this virtual plan a reality, that clarity made a huge difference from the very beginning.

“There were so many directions we could go with a house like that,” Jack, the owner of The Roofing & Siding Company, explained. “Just kind of already having that baked was super helpful.”

In fact, the homeowner was so invested in the design process that he printed the brick&batten renderings as oversized presentation sheets and organized them into a detailed binder the team referenced throughout the project. That level of excitement is exactly why we love these transformations!

Turning a Virtual Design Into a Real Home

Though the design itself created a clear roadmap, bringing it to life still required extensive collaboration and problem-solving. The team spent over two months working through logistics, local building code requirements, fire code restrictions, and material selection adjustments before construction even began.

Because of regional code limitations, not every originally specified material could be used exactly as planned. But rather than compromising the overall look, the team worked carefully to find alternatives that captured the same design intent. And in some cases, those substitutions became standout features.

One of the most eye-catching elements of the finished home is the warm horizontal slatted material wrapping the front columns and architectural details. Combined with:

  • Light natural stone
  • Moody charcoal siding
  • Warm wood-look soffits
  • Black-framed garage doors and windows

The home achieved that layered, high-end modern exterior look that feels current without feeling cold. Contrast matters, but warmth does too – and this project nailed that balance beautifully.

The Full Scope of the Exterior Project

Exterior transformations at this scale don’t happen overnight. Once construction officially began, the renovation took roughly three months to complete and involved nine separate crews working across different phases of the project.

At certain points, there were nearly 20 to 30 workers on-site between the exterior renovation team and simultaneous landscaping crews. It was chaotic, but also impressive! The full scope of the project included:

  • New siding installation
  • Stonework
  • Structural gable modifications
  • New soffits and trim details
  • Updated garage doors
  • Lighting upgrades
  • Exterior material transitions
  • Landscape redesign coordination

One of the most dramatic moments came early in the process, when the team reframed portions of the exterior and added the new front-facing gables.

“At the end of week one, we had just cut so much of the house to pieces,” Jack recalled. “But the new shape came together so quickly.”

That’s the power of a great exterior transformation. Sometimes, the biggest visual shifts happen before the finishing details are even completed.

The Shining Moment Everything Came Together

Every major renovation has a moment where it finally clicks. For this contractor, it happened near the very end of the project, during sunset.

The warm evening light hit the natural stone and highlighted the subtle creams, pinks, and golden undertones in the material palette. Standing outside, looking at the finished home, he realized they had created something truly special.

“I was like, wow… this is a gorgeous project that we’ve done here,” Jack said. “One of the nicest looking homes we’ve ever done.”

Honestly, we agree. The finished exterior is elevated, intentional, and cohesive from every angle. There’s no doubt this transformation made a world of difference for not only the homeowner, but the entire neighborhood. The transformation made such a strong impression that neighboring homeowners immediately started reaching out about their own homes.

According to the contractor, several neighbors specifically referenced design features from this project and expressed interest in creating something similar for their own properties. That’s one of the biggest compliments an exterior renovation can receive!

How the 1:1 Zoom Consultation Process Helped

One detail worth highlighting is the role the brick&batten Zoom consultation played early in the project.

For homeowners tackling large-scale exterior renovations, visualizing the final result can feel overwhelming. Having the ability to walk through the design with professionals, ask questions, and collaborate on direction helps create confidence before construction even begins.

In this homeowner’s case, it also helped streamline communication between the homeowner, designers, and contractor teams throughout the renovation process. That alignment matters a lot when you are coordinating a project with this many moving pieces.
